Dietitian vs. nutritionist: which do you need?

The words get used interchangeably, but they don’t mean the same thing. Here’s the plain difference — and how to choose the right person for your goal.

The core difference

A Registered Dietitian (RD) is a credentialed, regulated health professional. Becoming one requires an accredited degree, supervised practice hours, and passing a national exam — and RDs can provide medical nutrition therapy. The title “nutritionist,” by contrast, isn’t legally protected in most places: it can mean someone with deep training, or someone with a weekend certificate.

Simple rule: when it matters — a health condition, performance goals, or you just want advice you can trust — look for the letters RD (or RDN).

Which should you see?

  • See a Registered Dietitian if: you have a medical condition, want evidence-based performance or body-composition guidance, or want help you know is qualified and accountable.
  • A “nutritionist” may be fine if: you want general wellness coaching — just check their actual credentials.

What a dietitian actually does

Good nutrition work isn’t a meal plan handed over and forgotten. It’s an assessment of your goals, training and preferences; a realistic, all-foods-fit plan; and adjustments over time. For athletes, it’s fueling for performance and recovery; after 40, it’s protein and habits to hold muscle.
